Exhibit: Written in the Landscape

Organized by the Platform of Cultural Heritage and Cultural

Curators: Waltraud Kofler Engl and Elisabetta Rattalino

During the First World War, both the Austro-Hungarian and
Italian armies built complex infrastructural systems on the
High Plateau of the Tre Cime/Drei Zinnen, in the Sesto/Sexten
Dolomites. Traces of these infrastructures are still visible in
this iconic mountain landscape, today predominantly known
as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tourist region. Tracking,
documenting and studying these traces offers the possibility
of restoring the intricate landscape stratification of this
territory and its history, both of which are deeply intertwined
with the memory culture of the local Sesto/Sexten community.
The exhibition Scritto nel paesaggio/In die Landschaft
eingeschrieben presents a selection of the reproductions of
historical documents and historical photographs made by both
armies, examples of the archaeological documentation, and a
film made in conjunction with an archaeological survey carried
out in the summer of 2021. In addition, the exhibition includes
“Stimmen der Erinnerung – Sexten im Ersten Weltkrieg/Voci
della memoria – La Prima Guerra Mondiale a Sesto”, a film that
presents individual and collective memories of the destruction
of Sesto/Sexten and Moso/Moos caused during the bombing
of the area by the Italian army in 1915, the evacuation of the
town and its difficult reconstruction during the period 1919-
1923 following the return of the civilian population.
